Dedicated Fiber for Wylie ISD Enables Collaborative Teaching Apps and BYOD for K-12 Students

January 2015

– Chris Lamb, Chief Information Officer, Wylie Independent School District

The norm for most public schools today is to implement a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy just for the higher grades. The Wylie Independent School District, however, wanted its BYOD program to serve all of its more than 13,000 students in Kindergarten through High School. To meet that challenging goal, Wylie ISD partnered with Time Warner Cable Business Class (TWCBC).

Using BYOD to access new collaboration and Cloud-based tools

TWCBC used its experience as an E-rate eligible Telecommunications Provider to help Wylie upgrade to 1 Gbps Dedicated Internet Access (DIA). With E-rate funding helping Wylie schools make the BYOD program available to students to have their own devices, the district can focus its limited procurement budget on purchasing laptops and tablets for students who don’t already have them. This creates a richer, more inclusive learning experience for all.

The bandwidth and stability of TWCBC’s DIA solution let faculty take advantage of Cloud-based options rather than creating material in-house. Teachers and students are also able to use Google Apps for Education™ to take collaboration—and learning—to an all-new level.

Can insights from the Wylie Independent School District’s partnership with TWCBC enhance your own success story?
